This unit is an important aspect to the history of the written and spoken word. This unit emphasizes the importance of language to all people and the importance of discovering and de-coding dead languages for traditional and historical documentation purposes. This unit also highlights the importance of written and spoken language and how traditions are passed from generation to generation. Also, it emphasizes the importance of personal culture and traditions and being proud of who you are. This unit incorporates cooperative learning through pen-pal activities, uses technology for research, uses oral presentations to aid in learning and to make learning fun, and allows students to appreciate and understand the importance of language as it pertains to them. Finally, as students of Great Oak High School, this unit allows students to gain perspective and understanding of the Indian tribe that is built around their school. Students can gain and understanding of their culture and an appreciation of the way things are done in the tribe. They will gain historical knowledge of many aspects of the Luiseño Indian tribe and hopefully an appreciation and acceptance of those from a different culture.
